THRIFT FLIPPING

Updated: Apr 16, 2022

I love thrift shopping because not only do you find great deals on the things you love but also on items other people would love!

Thrift flipping is essentiallypurchasing something at a saving, and then making it more desirable to later sell for a profit..” This couldn't have been more simply said by https://resalvaged.com/author/wanderygypsymama/.

There have been countless times when I am thrifting and I find brand name items that are useful, in good condition, and importantly, at a great price. I may not need it at the time, but if you do a quick google search you may find that instead of paying the full retail of $40 this thrift store is selling it for $2. You may also find that they are selling on sites like eBay or Mercari. So what does this mean? Again, you don't need the item yourself, but you figured you can make a profit from it. This is called thrift flipping. But, does that mean we should do this with every item we find intriguing? No, but let's dive into how it works and how we can establish if an item is worth it.

Can you thrift flip anything?

Yes!, but the quality is key to thrift flipping because we want to make sure that we are selling something that someone else can use efficiently and not cheating them out of their money! Also, it is important to note to research the item before assuming the item is a great flip. A quick Google search will tell you everything you need to know about the item and if it is worth flipping or not! This will save you time and money in the long run!

TIPS

THE PRICE IS RIGHT!

The first thing to look for if an item works flipping is the price. Can you make a decent profit from it? Is this selling now? Where is it selling and for how much? These questions should arise when finding what may be a decent item to flip. Whether it is a name-brand item or not, thrift flipping can be done if pricing checks off the list. It is typical for resellers to buy items in a lower range so they can benefit from a bigger profit. It may not be smart to buy a $15 item and flip it for $20, that comes with time wasted, money wasted, and little profit. We not only have to think about the item price but what it takes to ultimately sell it (shipping, time, abundance, etc.)

For example;

Buying for $1-15

Reselling for $15-100+

It all depends on the items and their varying factors.

FINDING THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

To find the diamond in the rough, you have to search for it. Looking through countless items in a thrift store can benefit you in finding the right item(s) you're looking to flip. Spend some time reading the tags, searching for brands, and understanding the quality of things. You can make money with the extra effort you're willing to put in. If you do not mind spending a decent amount of time at the thrift store, thrift flipping is for you! It is also important to keep in mind that some days are better than others, there have been countless days for me that I leave a thrift store empty-handed.

SELL QUALITY WITH QUALITY

Listing quality items with quality pictures creates trust for your buyer. Overall, it is pleasing to see the items positioned and sold with appropriate pictures. Take the extra time to clean your items, have good lighting, and take enough pictures so that there are no questions about the item's appearance.

UNDERSTAND YOUR VALUE

Remember when I mentioned that quick google search? That's all it takes to understand your item! For better understanding though, you can search your item on eBay or other selling sites such as Facebook marketplace, Mercari, or Posh mark. Obtaining knowledge from different media about the price of your product and what it's going for will let you know if the thrifted item is worth buying or not. You do not want to waste your money and you do not want to scam yourself out of money. Do your research!

WHERE CAN I SELL IT?

I have been selling apps since I was about 18. It is easy, and a lot of apps create shipping labels for you. All you need to do is sign up, make an account, and start listing! Apps such as:

Mercari

Depop

Offer up

Posh mark

Facebook marketplace (Facebook)

eBay

Have any more suggestions for apps? Let me know!! Leave a comment or message :)

As someone who has little knowledge about thrifting, this post was very informational! This gave me extensive details while also being an easy read to come back to refresh on the information. I loved the picture shared since Care Bears are my absolute favorite!
