NEED$$? HERE'S HOW TO GET SOME!

Updated: Apr 16, 2022

Have you ever heard of reselling? Have you ever thought about YOU doing it?

It is not as hard as you may think... I have some tips and information about how to do it and where!

What is reselling??

In simple terms, it is buying an item and selling it to someone else for a profit. This can be done at retail stores, thrift stores, or between one another.

Many people take the opportunity to resell because they understand the prices of items and can flip a price from low to high with reselling. Meaning they might have bought the item for a low cost but are reselling it for higher than the price bought for a profit.

How to do it

1. Find items to resell. This can be done in several aspects, thrifting, shopping from a retailer, wholesaler, flea market, or even marketplace. You want to find items at a cheaper price than retail but make sure you can flip enough to make your money back and enough profit on your end.

2. Research. When you obtain your items, it is important that they are in the market's needs and wants at the time. Before purchasing items to resell, I highly recommend looking up the item to see the value and need for it. This can be a simple google search to see how much it is going for or even an eBay search to see what they are selling for. This is the best way to save your money and time!

3. Download the apps. Selling on apps has been made so easy! Download the app, make an account with your information, and list your item! Many apps offer to make shipping labels for sellers, so the process is worry-free.

4. Sell quality with quality. Once you are ready to list, make sure your items are clean and picture-worthy. You might also want to take time on the background of the item to make the space look simple, clean-cut, and able to see the item. Take several angle pictures of your item so your buyer has little to no question about the item's quality and visuals.

5. Get that green!!! $$$$ what are you going to do with it now?

What platforms/ apps can you resell on??

Different platforms are used for selling different items. As you can list your items on every platform, one platform might sell better for your specific item than another. I broke it down into generations-

Depop- Generation Z (born 1995-2009). I noted this because it is where more trendy, vintage, cool finds, and aesthetic items are posted. The app is known for its y2k (the year 2000) vibe and selling attraction.

Mercari- Millennials (born 1981-1984). The app has memorabilia, collectors' items, as well as items such as houses, clothes, or shoes, at a decent price. There doesn't seem to be a specific niche target on the app but is open to those who are looking for a good deal.

eBay- Baby boomers (born 1946-1964) eBay is a well-known app. The app is popular for specific item searches and contains thousands of items that are old, new, used, and needed/wanted. I believe eBay is loved and trusted by the older generation because there is value in the company, and it is very trusted amongst its sellers and buyers. Having said this, it is my opinion, that baby boomers want something they know is legit and will not make them feel uneasy.

*This is just an overview of what to expect from the apps. In my opinion, nothing factual.

Depop-

Depop is a free app that allows for domestic and worldwide shipping. The unique items listed for Depop are diverse and fashionable in every way.

The fees that come along with Depop are 10% on every sale.

Transaction free around 2.9%

Shipping with Depop is quite simple. Depop goes with the weight of your package to determine the cost of its shipping.

Extra small (under 4 oz) $4.05

Small (under 8 oz) $5.05

Medium (under 1lb) $7.05

Large (under 2 lbs.) $11.75

Extra Large (under 10 lbs.) $15.75

*You can opt for the buyer or yourself to pay shipping costs.

eBay-

eBay is frequently used and loved for its global reach and the number of different categories it contains. You can find and list almost anything on eBay! You can list up to 1,000 items a month for free, just by setting up an account.

How much does it cost to sell from eBay FAQS?

“Your first 250 listings each month are free and after there's a $0.35 intersection fee per listing.” For each item sold; eBay receives 10% of your sale.

You can ship with eBay with the additional charges to the buyer or seller with shipping fees. Depending on lbs. shipping starts at around $8.

*You can opt for the buyer or yourself to pay shipping costs.

eBay offers local pickup too. eBay ensures seller protection with proof of pickup.

To scan the QR code:

  1. Go to Selling on the eBay App.

  2. Go to the Sold tab.

  3. Select the Arrange Pickup banner.

  4. Tap the Scan to confirm the pickup button.

Facebook Marketplace-

This comes with having the Facebook app. This free platform allows buyers and sellers to ship and locally meetup. One of the best things about the Marketplace is that there are no fees for selling an item. This is vital to resellers because we can get directly what the listed price is (with some hassle if the buyer wants to counter).

You can edit the delivery method:

“Shipping & local pickup”

This includes local pickup as well as shipping for buyers who prefer that option.

“Shipping only”

Buyers across the country or nearby can opt for shipping only on items. Their order will ship to their address. Facebook marketplace offers a prepaid shipping label as well as the option to use your own shipping label.

“Local pickup only”

This can range from

Public meetup- meet at a public location

Door pickup- buyers pick up from your location

Door drop-off- seller drops off at buyers' location

Prices for shipping range from:

0.5 lbs. $4

0.5-1 lbs. $5.75

1-2 lbs. $9.25

2-5 lbs. $13.50

5-10 lbs. $22

*You can opt for the buyer or yourself to pay shipping costs.

Once you list your item you can choose different outlets to list it on. Such as different groups or locations. Once your item has been listed for 2 weeks you can renew the item listing so it is posted in the Facebook feed once again.

Mercari-

Mercari is a buying and selling app that is “a perfect place to declutter or discover items…” Selling is easy, and they now offer local pickup.

Like any other app, to list your item you make a description, post the category, and condition of your listed item.

Mercari aims to help sellers sell their items faster with smart prices. (For example, your item is listed at $55, Mercari will gradually list it at $44) However, this is optional!

Mercari makes 10% of your sales transaction. As well as a 3% processing fee.

When making a sale, buyers can counter your offer as it will be sent to you in Mercari messages where you can counter back or decline their offer. If you accept their offer, the sale will be confirmed.

Shipping-

Mercari offers a prepaid label or gives you the option to make your own.

*You can opt for the buyer or yourself to pay shipping costs.

Mercari shipping starts at $6.18 for up to 1 lb. shipping.

The services offered are:

USPS

FedEx

UPS

Reselling has always been a topic that has been hard to grasp. As a seller, it is great, but often times as a buyer, it can be hard to see the price increase from retail. Nevertheless, this has been informational and i'll be sure to keep these tips in mind if I attempt to resell any items in the future!
